Aluminum dropped to a six- year low.

Aluminum dropped $7, or 0.5 percent, to $1,323 a ton. It earlier reached $1,316, the lowest since Oct. 14, 2002. U.S. and Canadian demand for the metal fell 16 percent from a year earlier in December and slid 8.1 percent for 2008 as a whole, the Aluminum Association Inc. said.

LME inventories of aluminum, used in the car and construction industries, rose to a record 3.09 million tons, with the majority going into warehouses in the U.S.

The increase suggests production will have to be cut further, said Gayle Berry, an analyst at Barclays Capital in London.

Industry News: Leading Aluminium Producer Sells Major Share Holding in Coal Mine

UC RUSAL, the world’s largest aluminium and alumina producer, announces that, within the framework of its joint venture in Kazakhstan, it has signed an agreement to sell a 50% share in coal mining at the Ekibastuzskoye coal field to Samruk Holding managing state assets. The coal field is located at the Bogatyr and Severny coal mines in the Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan.

Under the signed agreement, Samruk Holding will pay UC RUSAL USD 345 million accounting for a 50% share in coal mining at the Bogatyr and Severny coal mines. The cost of this stake was calculated by Deutsche Bank through a detailed audit and evaluation of the asset.

In November 2007 UC RUSAL and Samruk Holding signed an agreement to establish a joint venture to develop coal and energy industries in Kazakhstan. Under the joint venture, which is currently being established, UC RUSAL and Samruk Holding will produce and deliver coal to serve the Kazakh and Russian markets. The companies will also explore opportunities to use coal for the development of power generating assets as a basis for metals and mining production.

The parties will complete all legal and organizational procedures by September 2008.

New Supply Contract
In 2008, Accelor Precision Corporation has entered into an agreement with one of the leading manufacturers of PV modules in East Europe to offer aluminum profiles over a one year period. The contract provides for fixed volumes over the course of the term at fixed prices for each shipment. Based on existing contract prices, the value of the aluminum profile to be supplied is approximately $1 million to $1.5 million. This agreement combined with recent deals with other European customers, have convinced us an even bright prospect.
